Indigenous Psychological Services is raising alarm over a growing crisis, with new figures showing increases in both Suicide and overdose rates among Indigenous populations in Alberta.
Leigh Sheldon, Founder of Indigenous Psychological Services tells CJWE suicide and overdose rates have increased over the past year, as program cuts and shifting barriers make it harder for Indigenous people to access the supports and services needed to heal.
Sheldon emphasizes that culturally grounded, community-focused programs are key, noting that workshops and group-based support can be more effective than one-on-one approaches.
If you or someone you know is struggling, help is available. You can call or text 988, Canada’s suicide crisis helpline, or reach the Hope for Wellness Helpline at 1-855-242-3310, which offers support for Indigenous peoples.
