A group of Piikani Nation Elders is hosting a prayer ceremony for the health and future of the water on Crowsnest Lake this Saturday, April 4, 2026 at 10am.
Scientists from the Government of Alberta confirmed the fish in Crowsnest lake contains tissue selenium concentration.
There is a legal action against the Government of Canada, the Government of Alberta, and Evolve Power (owner of Tent Mountain coal mine).
And Piikani conservation leader Trevor Bastien is asserting his First Nation treaty and constitutional rights to harvest fish in Piikani ancestral waters.
Crowsnest Headwaters have joined forces with the Piikani people to bring awareness to this issue. Communications Coordinator, David Thomas says “He wants the water to be cleaned and healthy for everybody’s benefit. The Piikani people depend on the fish for food but it’s poisoned”.
