April 16th at 7pm was the Christianize, Colonize and Civilize installment of Hot Dogs and Hot Takes. It was a 1.5 hour talk and Q&A with Otsskoipiiks’aakii Paula Smith, Indigenous Relations Manager at The Confluence and Confluence President Jennifer Thompson. Hot Dogs and Hot Takes is an event where every month, a historian or specialized expert will share research, teach and offer new perspectives on the history we think we know.

This installment was also important as April marks the 150th anniversary of the signing of The Indian Act, a piece of legislature with many effects on Indigenous Canadians today.

CJWE was able to speak with Paula Smith after the event, and ask about her work and studies.

We asked Paula about what else is coming up at The Confluence.

We asked Paula for one of her Hot Takes.

The next installment of Hot Dogs and Hot Takes goes down in mid-May with a new speaker and new Hot Takes. Announcements and tickets can be found here.
