A new partnership between Siksika Health Services and the City of Calgary is putting sport and recreation at the centre of reconciliation and community well-being and it’s meant to inspire others to follow suit.
The agreement was recently formalized through the signing of a memorandum of understanding, alongside a Blackfoot ceremony, highlighting the cultural significance behind the collaboration.
For Siksika Health Services, sport and recreation play a major role in a holistic approach to health, one that includes mental, physical, and spiritual well-being, all grounded in Siksika culture. Officials say this agreement reflects a genuine, long-term commitment to that vision.
The partnership is about more than just programming. Leaders say it’s focused on building relationships, fostering collaboration, and supporting healing within Siksika Nation and for members living in Calgary.
From the City of Calgary’s perspective, the focus isn’t just on what will be done but how it will be done working together in a way that respects shared values and strengthens community connections.
The partnership also recognizes Siksika Nation’s deep-rooted history in athletics.
Looking ahead, that legacy will be celebrated with the planned opening of a Siksika Sports Hall of Fame in September 2027, with support from partners including the University of Calgary.
Together they agreer, it’s a step forward in using sport as a powerful tool not just for physical activity, but for connection, culture, and lasting change.
