A new animal is coming to the Calgary Zoo this summer

The Wilder Institute/The Calgary Zoo are set to welcome in two Sichuan takins into their Asia Highlands area. The Sichuan takin species is originally from China, but these ones are a Canadian transfer.

The Sichuan takins are well adapted for Canadian winters, they feature rather large noses that help heat up the cold air before it reaches their lungs. The long, brown and oily coats help to battle the snow, and the enclosure itself will feature several heavy brush areas, somewhere the takins might feel more comfortable, as traditionally, they are found in thick, bambooed areas.

We had the opportunity to speak with Kim Walker, senior manager of Animal Care and Welfare to talk about these fascinating animals, and how their team helps the animals transition to a new environment.

We also asked Kim about how they have prepared for the new arrivals.

CJWE talked to Kim about when the public can expect to meet the new members.

The announcement of the additions were part of an $8 million funding commitment from Travel Alberta, including the multi-year development of the Asian Highlands area.
