Each winter, Avalanche Canada provides updates on the avalanche risks in the mountains west of Calgary.
Now that it’s springtime, they have wrapped up their regularly updated forecasts.
But, they are still warning that avalanche hazards can still be present well into spring.
While they have stopped their updates, Avalanche Canada is reminding those heading out to the mountains to pay close attention to freezing levels, solar radiations, and new precipitation, whether it’s rain or snow, as this time of year the avalanche danger has lots of variables.
On top of that, they are advising people to start their hikes early and finish them early.
With them ending their regular updates, Avalanche Canada has replaced their danger ratings with a “spring conditions” icon, which means the avalanche danger could be variable and can range from Low to High throughout the day.
Avalanche Canda is advising hikers to reduce their exposure to avalanche terrain while there is solar radiation, daytime warming, or rain.
Despite it being springtime, winter-like storms with corresponding storm slab and wind slab avalanche problems are still possible.
