With the prevalence of over-the-phone and online chat scams, Tsuut’ina Police are warning those, especially Elders, about ongoing scams. The warning says to be aware of any calls claiming to be from Telus or other cell phone providers, as scammers impersonating workers are calling offering to lower monthly bills, offer a new device, a new contract. This account information that’s gathered has even been used to order new devices through the victims account, leaving the scammer with a new device, and the victim with the bill.
The scam is not new, as the Edmonton Police reported over 91 complaints totaling out to more than $600,000 in 2024. The Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre also reported that seniors accounted for more than 40% of overall reported losses to fraud. Tsuut’ina Police is asking those with older family members to keep them aware, and if you are ever unsure if a call is legitimate, hang up and call Telus directly.
