April 26th saw an influx of “Ploggers”, more than 40 of them across Canmore last week. They braved the cold and unsettled weather to collect more than 60 bags of garbage off the streets.

Plogging is an old Swedish term that refers to the combination of jogging, and picking up litter.

The 8th annual Strides event has collected more than 8,000 pounds of trash in Canmore alone.

The impact moves past simply removing litter alone. Local residents, inspired by the ploggers, took to the streets to help clean things up during Earth week, and many schools in the area are starting to incorporate plogging into class activities, and even businesses are getting on board to help push and expand the initiative.

The Canadian Rockies Public Schools took part in the event as well, with students collecting more than 50 pounds of trash.
