The Town of High River has begun their annual river monitoring updates.

According to the Town of High River, the current snowpack is within normal levels for this time of year, and is currently at 469.20 mm of snow water equivalent.

In the Town’s first river monitoring update last year, which took place on May 16, 2025, the snowpack was below average and was at 236 mm of snow water equivalent, whereas in 2024, it was sitting around 374 mm of snow water equivalent at this time of year.

Currently, the slow rate of the Highwood River, below Little Bow Canal, is a bit above the normal rate at 26 cubic metres per second, whereas typical flows for early May range from 6 to 19 cubic metres per second.

While there is light precipitation in the forecast in the coming week, no significant changes in the river levels are expected to occur.

On May 16, 2025, it was reported that the Highwood River below the canal was below average, and a water shortage advisory was put in place on the Highwood River.

Town of High River staff will continue to monitor the snowpack conditions and the river levels throughout the hazard season.
