A recent close call with a grizzly bear in Kananaskis Country has prompted a Bear Warning.
On May 4, a grizzly bear bluff charged a hiker, getting within 4 feet of the person.
Because of that, a Bear Warning has been implemented for Bow Valley Wildland Provincial Park, Evan-Thomas Provincial Recreation Area, Hay Meadow Trail, High Level Trail, Skogen Pass Trail, Stoney Trail, Sunburst Trail, Trolls Falls Trail, and Hummingbird Plume Lookout Trail.
While the advisory is in place for these areas, Alberta Parks warn that bears can be encountered at any time.
To help avoid an unexpected encounter with a bear, make plenty of noise, travel in groups, be aware of your surroundings, look and listen for bears and their signs, keep pets on a leash, secure attractants, such as food and garbage, in a bear proof area, and carry bear spray in an easy to access area.
Alberta Parks encourages people to report sightings and incidents to 403-591-7755.
