Alberta’s Project Forest Plants Millionth Tree at Blackfoot Crossing Historical Park

Over the past five years, non-profit organization, Project Forest, has planted more than one million trees and plants across Canada in partnership with conservation groups and First Nations communities. What began as a reforestation initiative has evolved into a broader effort focused on reconciliation, community healing, and reconnecting people with nature.

To celebrate the milestone, Project Forest is hosting community BBQ and seedling giveaway on May 22 at Blackfoot Crossing Historical Park.

The event not only marks the planting of the organization’s millionth tree, it’s also highlighting the ongoing efforts to restore biodiversity while strengthening community relationships through reforestation.

The non-profit has supported projects in communities including Doig River First Nation, Swan River First Nation, and Siksika First Nation, where its largest project is underway.

Executive Director Mike Toffan spoke with CJWE about working alongside Indigenous communities and how it has become the organization’s most meaningful work, helping create spaces where people can connect with the land, culture, and one another:
