Next Tuesday promises to be a way in for those who might not be as confident in their powwow dancing, or those simply looking for new ways to get active. The Aboriginal Friendship Centre in Calgary is putting on a Beginner Powwow Dance + Cardio event, in a partnership with Carya, a social impact agency in the city, specifically for adults (or those 16+ with supervision).

The classes are taught by Shirly Hill and Luke Whiteman, and the beginner-friendly dance class infuses traditional men’s and women’s fancy dance with modern cardio twist.

With no dance experience needed, it’s a perfect opportunity to reduce stress and improve your health. A traditional feast from Soupz Kitchen is to follow, and a traditional art session with Krista White, the AFCC Cultural Manager and Media Spokesperson.

We had the chance to chat with Krista about the connection with Carya for this event.

We also asked about the origins of a “Powwow Sweat”, and how it came to be.

Krista told us about her traditional art session, where she will lead the group on beaded leather pouches, and what they are used for.
