Two Systems, One Weekend: Why Southern Alberta Should Pay Attention

By Benjamin Gerow May 28, 2026 | 3:06 PM

As of now, much of eastern Alberta is currently under a heat advisory, with temperatures in the next few days in the low-to-mid 30’s, due to the elevated risk of heat-related illnesses.

The main culprit for this heat wave? A high pressure anchored ridge known as the Omega Block, named so because of the shape it forms when two low-pressure systems sit southeast and southwest of a strong ridge of pressure. The opposing rotations of the low pressure system cause the hot air to remain trapped, and for Alberta, that is occurring from eastern Alberta to the eastern border of Manitoba.

The “heat dome” that ensues can be dangerous for vulnerable individuals and non, as the prolonged exposure to temperatures greater than our own body temperature, all of the bodies internal systems need to work harder.

This pattern will continue until tomorrow night, where an extreme shift in the weather will occur. A multi-day rain event is on the schedule for much of Alberta, but the system will start late Friday for British Colombia, and by Saturday, Alberta will have some heavy rain to contend with.

Some areas in the province are expected to receive more than 50 mm of rain during the multi-day storm, if not more, with Calgary very likely to see that amount.

Always stay informed with the weather and watch for major temperature drops, and during the heat-wave remember to look for signs of heat-related illness like confusion, dizziness, thirst, dark urine and intense fatigue.
