The first annual Niitsitapi Day will be celebrating National Indigenous People’s Day on June 21st, and has a variety of attractions to help celebrate the day. For organizers, the goal is simple: to create a space where Indigenous and non-Indigenous people can come together and celebrate during a day of culture, pride and community.
The main attraction is the Warrior Race, a team event featuring two Piikani men, one woman and one “outsider”, making room for broader participation from attendees. In addition, many traditional games will be played on the day, including a Double Ball tournament.
Families and attendees will find no shortage of things to do at the event, with tipi raising and stories offering cultural learning, bouncy castles for kids and a Father’s Day BBQ slated for noon the day of. Afterwards, attendees will receive free concession during a movie screening at the Multi.
The night will come to an end with an 11pm showing of some fireworks.
We spoke with Chas Smith, program supporter about the event and asked about how the event came to be.
Chas also talked to us about the warrior relay.
We asked Chas about the biggest challenge of hosting the event.
