The Tsuut’ina Sports Series: Hooking the Next Wave of Youth Anglers

By Benjamin Gerow Jun 16, 2026 | 10:44 AM

Every second Friday, the Youth Programs on Tsuut’ina Nation bring out today’s youth, and teaches them how to fish.

Poles, bait, and know-how are all supplied, which allows the kids a perfect opportunity to re-connect with their culture, and experience first-hand how their ancestors used to live. The youth are even fed, meaning participation only requires respect, and being dropped off.

For the Youth team, putting on events can sometimes be a shot in the dark, and until the kids show up, it can be hard to tell what they want to do, but the fishing program has seen large numbers of attendees already.

In fact, after speaking with members of the team, the kids almost know more about fishing than the organizers. There are no set species for the kids to catch, and the experience is more about learning the basics and essentials of fishing.

We spoke with Summer McInnis, Youth Coordinator about the fishing program and how the fishing program started.

We asked about what the kids have learned already, and what they will be learning.

Summer told us about the fish that are being caught.

We asked Summer about what it means to see the kids out and about.
