The Mountain Buffalo Warrior Program is a program offered by the Banff Centre. The program starts on October 4th, and ends on the 9th. Registration is currently open, but only about a third of the registration is filled.

The program offers young Indigenous people a culturally grounded space to expand their leadership skills and build confidence.

In past years, The indigenous leadership team at the Banff Centre has heard the need for youth programming and responded, and included a gathering of thought leaders. The program also includes the youth and their voice in the creation of the program, as well as traditional protocol.

Participants learn through shared experiences, professional development and wellness.

Details of what exactly participants are doing is kept intentionally quiet, but land-based learning and ceremony are some of the pillars.

It’s all designed to allow young Indigenous people to embolden the skills they need to take back to their communities and make changes.

Not only that, but the Banff Centre is even giving partial scholarships to help those working for Indigenous communities and organizations.

The age range is 18-30, and ideal candidates would be early in their leadership journey, be coming from diverse contexts like northern or remote communities. The eligibility is also inclusive of the 2SLGBTQIA+ and those with diverse identities.

We got to speak with Simon Ross of the Banff Centre, and asked about how the program helps the young Indigenous people with leadership skills.

We asked about what hands-on experiences might be in store.

Simon told us about how the program looks to evolve in the coming years.
