According to the Country Thunder website and Kim Blevins, Executive Director, Country Thunder is being cancelled due to “active construction, loss of critical infrastructure and restrictive sound limitations”, claiming it makes the execution of the festival impossible.
The website states that the construction and traffic reduction of 9th avenue interferes with access routes for production and emergency services, and a water line bypass pipe that was last minute installed through areas designated for festival use. Country Thunder also points to a reduced decibel noise permit that prevents the event from “standard production levels.”
The festival was originally planned for this weekend, the 26th to the 28th, and was expected to draw 25,000 attendees in downtown Calgary.
“We do not take this decision lightly,” said Kim Blevins, Executive Director, Country Thunder. “Our fans travel from across the country to be part of this experience and we owe them an event they can enjoy fully. The city-driven conditions in Calgary this year make that impossible. Proceeding would have meant compromising on not only safety but also the fan experience and that is not something we are willing to do.”
All ticket holders will receive a full refund according to the website. Those who purchased online directly through the front gate will get a refund in 30 days.
