In a step toward deeper collaboration, the City of Calgary is pursuing a Memorandum of Understanding with Bearspaw First Nation.
The city’s intergovernmental affairs committee gave unanimous support to the agreement during its meeting on July 16. The proposed non-binding MOU would create a formal framework for ongoing partnership, focusing on areas of mutual interest such as economic development opportunities and shared services.
The agreement still requires final approval from both Calgary city council and Bearspaw First Nation council. Once approved, it would be formally signed by Bearspaw Chief Darcy Dixon and Calgary Mayor Jeromy Farkas.
Calgary previously signed an MOU with the Blackfoot Confederacy in May 2025 and another with the Siksika Health Centre in April. A similar agreement is also in development with Tsuut’ina Nation, which first requested the partnership in November 2024.
The Town of Cochrane and the three Stoney Nakoda Nations — Chiniki, Goodstoney, and Bearspaw — took a significant step forward last spring by signing a joint proclamation that commits the parties to annual council-to-council meetings, regular senior staff discussions, and the development of protocols to ensure transparent and respectful communication.
