In a news release, the Calgary Fire Department says it responded to three serious fires on Sunday, which “challenged the department’s ability to manage multiple complex emergencies while maintaining emergency response coverage for Calgary residents.”
Around 12pm on Sunday, fire crews responded to a structure fire in the 400 block of MacLeod Trail SE, and encountered a substantial fire with multiple occupants requiring rescue. Approximately 50 residents were displaced.
While crews were working on that fire, the CFD was dispatched to another major fire that was reported around 2pm on Sunday, in the 100 block of 16th Street NW. When crews arrived, they were greeted by two detached garages involved in the fire. Crews were able to prevent spread to other properties, and no injuries were reported.
Only an hour later, around 3pm, crews had to respond to a major incident at the Shepard Landfill. The fire was complex and due to the magnitude, CFD had to coordinate with landfill staff, employ specialized tactics and heavy equipment to help mitigate the blaze.
The causes of all three fires remain under investigation by the Calgary Fire Department Fire Investigation Team. Damage estimates are not available at this time
The news release also said early detection played a serious role in protecting lives and property, and is reminding everyone to make sure smoke alarms are installed on every level of the home, and are tested monthly, and with dry, hot and windy conditions, the risk of fire in southern Alberta is greatly increased, and encourages residents to be extra cautious with any outdoor activities that could cause fires.
