Officials at the Calgary Zoo are trying to figure out how a grizzly bear managed to escape his habitat and wander the grounds.

One-year-old Fitz escaped around 7:30 Sunday morning.

He was quickly tracked down, immobilized and returned to his space.  There were no injuries to guests, staff, volunteers or animals.

The zoo says the disappearance immediately triggered a quick response from animal health and security teams.

“Fitz was successfully immobilized, and our [animal care] team safely relocated him to his back-of-house space, There were no injuries to guests, staff, volunteers or animals.”

Although the incident happened before the zoo opened to the public, the area where the zoo’s bears are housed remained temporarily closed while the zoo completes a full assessment of the area”
