More grizzly activity is popping up in southern Alberta, this time in the southeast reigon. There have been sightings near Milk River of grizzlies according to Alberta Parks, and a warning has been issued for the area.
The reports came from both the uplands and the river valley in the park, which is about an hour and a half from Lethbridge, or 160 kilometres.
To avoid a surprise encounter with a bear:
- make plenty of noise and travel in groups;
- be aware of your surroundings- look and listen for bears and their signs;
- keep your pet on a leash;
- carry bear spray, make sure it’s easily accessible and know how to use it; and
- secure attractants like food, garbage, pet food and any scented items in hard-sided vehicles or bear-proof lockers.
According to the province’s website, there are an estimated 700 to 800 grizzly bears in Alberta. Grizzlies are also a protected species, and the province says the primary sources of human-caused mortality are vehicle collisions, man-bear conflicts and poaching.
