The Town of Cochrane is going to be celebrating some local history with the unveiling of a new bench and sign honoring the Grandfather Tree, a 300-year-old white spruce, which stood along the Cochrane Ranche, before it ultimately fell during a windstorm of January 2025.
According to a news release from the Town of Cochrane, following the fall portions of the tree were preserved. The new bench incorporates materials from the tree, which gives it new purpose and a place to remember it’s history.
“The Grandfather Tree was a treasured part of Cochrane’s landscape and our community”, said Mayor Morgan Nagel. “Many of the people who live here have cherished memories of walking by or spending time at the tree over the years, and this bench is how we honour those memories.”
Preserved wood from the Grandfather Tree has also been used into local public art, and an artistic representation within Cochrane’s Bricolage installation.
The new bench and signage are now open to the public at the Grandfather Tree’s original location in the Cochrane Ranche. For more information about the Grandfather Tree and its history, visit cochrane.ca/grandfathertree
