Construction on a $24-million expansion of the existing continuing care facility on the Blood Tribe is set to begin as early as next week, with completion targeted for spring 2028.
Once finished, the project will double the number of available beds to 50, allowing elders to receive the support they need without leaving their community.
Specialized dementia care will also be available in a secure unit. Until now, anyone requiring that level of support had no choice but to move off-reserve, away from family and familiar surroundings.
“This day is the result of many years of hard work from many different Department of Health leaders, both past and present, former CEO Derrick Fox, and former Chief Charles Weasel Head; the list goes on,” said Kash Shade, CEO, Blood Tribe Department of Health.
The new expansion unit will include 20 supportive living beds and 5 dementia beds.
The apartment-style 3-story building will feature a cultural space, kitchen area, salon care, a secure dementia unit, administrative space, and a gathering space for families.
