Yesterday’s World Gorilla Day came with an announcement from the Wilder Institutes Calgary Zoo. In a press release, it was announced that the 25-year-old western lowland gorilla Dossi is now expecting.
The father-to-be is Jasiri, and the pregnancy was confirmed via urine test on June 7th. As of now, Dossi is between 16 and 17 weeks pregnant, with the birth of her baby set between late January of 2027 and early March of 2027.
Officials also said that Dossi’s pregnancy is developing well, with only minor changes being observed. The Calgary Zoo participates in the Western Lowland Gorilla Survival plan, which looks to provide a genetically diverse and healthy gorilla population, as the gorilla’s are critically endangered.
The two gorillas have not had any young since the loss of their two year old offspring, Eyare, who was born in 2022, and unfortunately passed during an incident with a hydraulic door in 2024.
