Some changes to Alberta’s pharmacy system are now in effect, giving Albertans with stable, long-term conditions the option of receiving larger supplies of certain medications at once.

Maintenance medications must generally be dispensed for at least 84 days, unless there’s a reason for more frequent dispensing.

Dispensing fees have also changed, with a maximum of $13.50 for prescriptions covering 84 days or more.

Albertans with private or employer drug coverage must now use that coverage before government drug plans kick in.

There’s also a new requirement to provide a personal health number when getting a free naloxone kit from a pharmacy. Community organizations are not affected by that change.

The new pharmacy funding framework is in place until March 2029.
