According to Alberta Wildfire, a lack of precipitation and ample dry fuel sources have raised the wildfire risk in Kananaskis, Canmore and Stoney Nakoda First Nation.

Dry, gust conditions are expected to continue, and could further increase wildfire risks in the area.

A prescribed burn is still underway on a load of fuel on the Stoney Nakoda Nation, and other areas include Ozada Flats, Star Ranch Road, Dixon Hill Road, and Bear Hill Road are also affected.

The agency is also reminding residents that smoke and flames from the prescribed burn may be visible from Highway 1 and 1A, near Ghost Lake and near the Mînî Thnî townsite over the coming weeks.

Despite being later into the year, the agency says wildfire season is not over, and it’s common to see increases in risk around this time of year, Alberta Wildfire also has resources in place to respond quickly to new wildfire concerns in the area. As of Tuesday, the wildfire danger is rated at 6, or moderate.
