It’s official, winter is around the corner, and these southern Alberta areas could see accumulating snow this weekend

The season’s first snowfall could be expected on Friday, as temperatures take a dive across the province. An incoming weather system that could bring accumulating snow, and could affect travel, has prompted a special weather statement from Environment and Climate Change Canada.

The notice says Thanksgiving travel could be affected, and that rain is starting in the northern areas of the province today, and that precipitation will change to snow in the west and central regions by Friday, and will result in snow for the rest of the province on Saturday.

The highest amounts of snow are forecasted in areas like Grand Cache, Hinton and Jasper National Park, where residents could see 20cm of snow over the weekend. According to the notice, snow amounts for other areas are still uncertain. The snow is expected to taper off Sunday.

Foothills County near Priddis and Brown-Lowery Provincial Park

Foothills County near Diamond Valley

Foothills County near Longview and Eden Valley Reserve

Foothills County near Okotoks and De Winton

Foothills County near High River and Aldersyde

Foothills County near Cayley

M.D. of Willow Creek near Nanton and Parkland

M.D. of Willow Creek near Claresholm and Stavely

Foothills County near Blackie

Siksika Reserve 146

Vulcan County near Arrowwood, Herronton, and Queenstown

Vulcan County near Vulcan and Ensign

Vulcan County near Carmangay and Champion
