Since 2020, the community of Walden in Calgary’s Ward 14 has been served by both a temporary fire station, and a temporary library. As of yesterday, new ground has broken on a project that would see a new fire station and public library built by 2028, in an effort to keep pace with the communities rapidly growing pace.

The new fire station is set to include two apparatus bays, which doubles the capacity of the current station. The additional space could also allow Calgary Fire to accommodate ladder trucks, tower units and other specialized vehicles.

Mayor Jeromy Farkas spoke at the groundbreaking, and acknowledged concerns about growth outpacing necessary services, and said more work needs to be done. The project is said to cost just over $34 million, and includes $4.1 million in provincial funding.
