Calgary & Surrounding areas restrict outdoor water use for homes and businesses

With drought like conditions and high temperatures hitting across southern Alberta, the City of Calgary and surrounding municipalities are asking their residence to conserve their use of water.

Calgary, along with the City of Chestermere and the Town of Strathmore have all issued stage one water restrictions to help preserve water during the heatwave.

 

 

 

Residence are being asked to:

  • Limit to watering properties to once a day.
  • Limit to washing personal vehicles once per week at a licensed business.
  • Not to fill decorative fountains/decorative features.
  • Use a broom to clean hard surfaces as an alternative to using a water to clean outdoor surfaces including sidewalks, driveways, and walkways.

Watering residential properties will be limited to once per week on alternating days.

Residence is encouraged to visit their municipal website to see the watering schedule for their area.

Meanwhile, the City of Airdire has an announced level two water restrictions which is only declared during times of emergency and drought.

Under level two restrictions, residence are restricted to the following:

  • Watering of lawns, gardens, trees, and shrubs is limited to one day per week (water on one of the days allowed on the watering schedule), for a maximum duration of one hour within the hours of 6 am to 9 am, 7 pm to 10 pm, or 1 am to 4 am
  • Residents and businesses are allowed to water gardens, trees and shrubs using handheld containers but please avoid watering at the hottest point in the day.
  • Cleaning building exteriors and windows is not permitted.
  • Filling of recreational water bodies including hot tubs, swimming and wading pools is not permitted.
  • Filling fountains and other decorative features is not permitted.
  • Water use for construction, including grading, compaction and dust control is permitted.

Families with kids can have their children and children at heart run through the sprinkler during the scheduled watering time.

Kiddie pools can be filled to help beat the heat during a level one restriction while under a level two restriction it is not allowed.
