The third annual Red Dress Day will be taking place across Alberta and in the city of Calgary it will be held Friday May 5th at 200 Memorial Drive NW.
Red Dress Day is a memorial to honor missing and murdered Indigenous women, girls and two-spirit people (MMIWG2S). The red dresses act as a visual reminder of all MMIWG2S, and the symbol of the Red Dress was pushed by Metis Artist Jamie Black.
On May 5th the memorial will start with ceremony at 5pm to 8pm. Indigenous Organizations like the Urban Society for Indigenous Youth (USAY) will be contributing to the event. Executive Director Leeanne Ireland of USAY share with CJWE what they’ll be doing during the event.
USAY works year round with Indigenous youth in the city of Calgary to empower them of not only their culture but also, keep the memories of MMIWG2S people alive. Ireland spoke on how USAY continues to work on help Red Dress day not just be a one time event.
