Another change will be taking place on June 25 to the Graduated Driver Licensing (GDL) program.
An Information technology system change will be implemented. If a driver is qualified to leave the GDL program, this technology will automatically check their driver file. If so, the system will alert the driver that they have completed the GDL status and will automatically remove them from the GDL program.
The changes that took place on April 1 included that drivers are no longer required to take the advanced road test to exit the (GDL) program.
Those eligible for exiting the GDL program must be:
18 years of age, have completed 24 months of probationary driving, if you have taken a Class 5 or Class 6 driver training program from a driver training school licensed by Transportation and Economic Corridors, you may be eligible to reduce the 24-month probationary period by up to six months and you must be suspension and demerit-free for the last 12 months
If a driver is not yet qualified to leave the GDL program, they will continue to participate in it while still being subject to the license limitations until they are.
The government of Alberta will send these drivers a letter confirming their departure from the GDL program or attend a registry and receive their Class 5 license or Class 6 license, In July 2023.
All restrictions on a driver’s GDL license will remain in place until one of those two options happen.
