The Kainai (Blood Tribe) and the Alberta Government broke ground for a new recovery community to help many in southern Alberta fighting addition.
Dan Williams Minister of Mental Health and Addiction shared how the new facility which will house the recovery community will impact the area.
The Provincial Government will be investing $30-million dollars towards the facility in the Blood Tribe that will have 75 beds for people coming to the community and the facility is estimated to have approximately 300 people coming through the doors per year. People who attend the facility can stay for a year for treatment.
Councillor Piinaakoyim Tailfeathers spoke on the importance of having programing that is designed for members of the Nation while also recognizing that there is still much work to be done.
Part of the programing will include Blackfoot healing ceremonies and teaches that will help re-connect members to the community while being able to stay on the path of sobriety.
A total of 11 recovery communities are planned or underway in Alberta, including in Red Deer, Lethbridge, Siksika, Gunn, Blood Tribe, Enoch, Tsuut’ina, Calgary and Grande Prairie.
Construction of the Blood Tribe recovery community is expected to be completed in 2024.
