For the past five years, the Dance Collection of Danse has been honouring Canadians who’ve made an impact in the world of dance.
For many Indigenous communities in Canada, dance has been a part of ceremony and healing.
However, around the time of the signing of the Indian Act in the late 1800’s to 1951 many of these dances including Powwows were illegal.
In 2019, the Danse Hall of Fame inducted Mik’k ai’stoowa Chief Red Crow of the Kainai (Blood Tribe) Nation who found ways to keep the traditions alive.
Fast Forwarding to 2023, a long-time member of the Powwow Trail and Academic Karen Pheasant-Naganigwane, is being honoured for her life of Jingle Dress Dancing.
She is currently working at Mount Royal University in Calgary Alberta as a assistant professor in the Department of Humanities and General Education.
Pheasant-Naganigwane is also a Scholar at the University of Alberta and is the award-winning author of Powwow: A Celebration through Song and Dance.
Windspeaker Radio Network spoke with Pheasant-Naganigwane about being inducted and how Jingle is the focus of her doctorial distraction.
The induction ceremony will be taking place at the Palais Ryal Ballroom in Toronto Sunday November 5, 2023.
The event is available online with the purchase of a ticket from the Dance Collection’s website.
