November 8th is nationally recognized as National Aboriginal Veterans Day.
It gives Canadians a chance to really recognize the contributions of Indigenous Service members across Canada.
According to the federal government, over 4,000 Indigenous people voluntarily served Canada during World War I, which took place from 1914 to 1918.
Many First nations, Inuit and Metis people voluntarily enlisted in the 2nd world war as well.
By the time the war ended in 1945, over 3,000 First Nations members, as well as Métis, Inuit, and other Indigenous recruits, represented Canada in the war.
National Aboriginal Veterans’ Day started in Winnipeg in 1994 and since then, has spread across the country.
