A grade 5 class at the Nakoda Elementary school has won the 2023 CBC Music Class Challenge. The class will be taking the $5000 prize and reinvesting it into more recording equipment.
The class took a popular drake song and used recording software to isolate the rapper’s vocals, they then designed their own melody and added a kick and some shakers and layered the track with a local pow wow track.
The whole process took the class about a month to complete.
The class also plans to use part of the prize money to refurbish the school’s pow wow drum which is currently out of commission.
The win will inject much needed funds into the school’s learning budget which has been limited by a two per cent cap placed on funding increases for First Nations by the federal government in 1996.
This funding cap hasn’t changed since 1996 and according to the Assembly of First Nations, this has led to First Nations schools receiving thousands of dollars less per student compared to spending in provincially funded schools.
