A state of local emergency was declared on Siksika Nation Saturday morning due to the extreme cold.
With many across the nation not having heat in their homes and the average temperature hovering around -32, a special Chief and Council meeting was held to decide the best course of action.
To help the community, Siksika Nation Administration has the following supports to assist Nation Members:
- Siksika Deerfoot Sportsplex is open to Siksika Nation members who currently have no heat in their homes.
- Transportation is available to those who need a ride to the Sportsplex, please call 403-734-3815 for assistance.
- Families with elders and children who currently have no heat in their homes are to contact Tom Many Heads at 403-361-1527 for hotel accommodations.
It is important to also check on all family members to make sure they have heat and are in a safe place.
Siksika Health Services offers these guides on staying warm during the extreme cold temperatures:
- Bundle Up & Stay Warm: Encourage elders to dress in layers, wear warm clothing, and use blankets indoors to stay cozy.
- Hot Meals & Hydration: Make sure they have access to hot, nourishing meals and remind them to stay hydrated, even in the colder months.
- Home Safety Checks: Assist in helping to keep their living spaces warm and safe.
- Regular Check-Ins: A friendly phone call or a quick visit can make a huge impact. Check in on your elderly neighbors regularly to provide companionship and see if they need any assistance.
- Transportation Support: Offer help with transportation for essential needs like grocery shopping when it is safe to do so.
The local state of emergency will be in place until it is deemed safe and has dissipated.
