Despite the hot temperatures and little cloud cover, residents and visitors to Calgary gathered at the Confluence Historic Site and Parkland to celebrate Métis culture.
On July 9, members of the Elbow River Métis District 6 held a festival to engage the public about the rich history of the Métis as those passing along 9 AVE SW would have seen a Red River Cart and bright blue infinite flag.
District Captain of District 6 Carmen Lasané explained that it is important to celebrate Métis Culture during the ten days day of Stampede because of the shared ties to the land Metis have to the area around the Bow and Elbow Rivers.
Various activities that guests took part in at the at cultural festival included, jigging, fiddling, market with local vendors, stories from local elders, and games that taught how the Métis work and live.
Local Métis Steve Chapman who was assisting with the organizing of the games, explained how a game which had participants race while carrying a single 40 lb simulated how Métis carried heavy loads from their canoes.
