September 22, 2024 Marks the 147th anniversary of the signing of Treaty 7.
Treaty 7 was signed in 1877, an agreement between the Crown and five bands in southern Alberta, the Kainai (Blood), Siksika (Blackfoot), Piikani (Peigan), Nakoda (Stoney) and Tsuu T’ina (Sarcee).
The treaty covers 130,000 square kilometres of land from the Rocky Mountains to the Cypress Hills in the east and Red Deer River south to the U.S. border.
The primary treaties process began between Blackfoot Chief Crowfoot and John McDougall in 1875, it was concluded on September 22, 1877 and signed at the Blackfoot Crossing of the Bow River.
Treaty 7 is one of 11 treaties between First Nations and the Crown between 1871 and 1921.
The anniversary of Treaty 7 is a moment of recognition. It symbolizes resilience in colonial pressure and ongoing struggles for justice and recognition.
