In downtown Coleman, a National Historic Site in the Crowsnest Pass, Alberta, there lays a dormant, once shining cultural gem: The Roxy Theatre. This 40s-built, Quonset-style theatre is a rarity, with only 4 left in Canada and less than 20 left in the USA.
In 2019, the Roxy was threatened with demolition, and locals took up the call to rescue and fundraise to restore this piece of artistic history.
Fred Bradley, member of the ‘Revive the Roxy Theatre’ building committee, shares the situation with CJWE.
Local theatre troops, choirs, filmmakers, musicians, and other performers all hope to use the venue, and there’s a proposal to also use it to show Hollywood movies – a service the local community is lacking. So far they have raised $203,000 which is currently 41% of the funds needed.
