Calgary’s Indigenous community once again has the chance to see what it’s like to be a firefighter and potentially start a new career with a special training camp.
On Jan. 8, the Calgary Fire Department announced it has opened its registration for its second annual Indigenous camp.
The goal of the camp is to provide hands-on training, valuable insights into the firefighting profession, and an opportunity for participants to learn new skills and engage with experienced firefighters.
Calgary Fire Chief Steve Dongworth says it is important for the City’s fire service to reflect the community it serves.
During the camp, chosen participants will be exposed to the day-to-day life of a firefighter while also connecting them with future mentors who will be able to help guide them through a career in firefighting.
Along with getting the hands-on experience, participants will gain first-hand knowledge of the application process for the Calgary Fire Department.
Over the years, the Calgary Fire Department has seen a growing number of Indigenous firefighters join its ranks and as the March intake coming in a few months, Chief Dongworth is hopefully that graduates from the first Indigenous Camp in 2024 will be taking part in this year’s intake.
The deadline for all applications for the camp is Feb. 7 with the camp scheduled for this May from May 2 to May 4 at the Calgary Fire Training Academy and Multi-Agency Training in the city.
