The Piikani Nation has become the very First Nation to establish a Citizens Patrol (ACOPA) chapter on the Nation in partnership with the Alberta RCMP.
Citizens on Patrol is a volunteer-based initiative that mobilizes local residents to work in cooperation with law enforcement, serving as the eyes and ears of their community to enhance safety and reduce crime.
Citizens on Patrol members are trained volunteers who conduct community patrols in pairs, using their own vehicles, to observe and report suspicious activity to local law enforcement.
The volunteers chosen possess a deep knowledge of their community, which allows them to identify unusual or criminal activity more effectively.
With the new chapter established in Piikani, there are now 44 ACOPA chapters in the province.
This new chapter officially launched back in October of 2024 and performed its first patrol on Halloween night.
Currently the chapter has seven members trained and are making patrols within the community and those wishing to get involved can visit ACOPA’s website.
