Alberta Day is a day dedicated to celebrating Alberta’s diversity and unique culture throughout the province on September 1.

Because of the success of the Lead by Example Powwow that has been taking place in Strathmore for the past three years, which is organized by the Kakato’si Kristian Ayoungman Foundation, in bringing the neighbouring communities of Siksika and Strathmore closer together.

The City of Chestermere asked the Foundation to organize its first Powwow as part of the city’s Alberta Day celebration.

Co-Founder of the Foundation, Melodie Ayoungman-Hunt, explains how the City came to the Foundation to set up its Powwow, which is a prelude to a bigger Powwow planned for next year.

The Powwow will have Blackfoot Confederacy as the Host Drum, along with other drum groups like Sorrel Rider, and will feature a Men’s Chicken Dance 18+ Special from Sheldon Scalplock Sr.

This celebration is aimed at building bridges between First Nations and Settler communities, and Ayongman-Hunt says a way to help build that foundation is by taking part in the Intertribal Dances.

The Powwow’s grand entry will begin at 1 P.M. at John Peake Memorial Park, located along East Park Drive.

Live streaming of the Powwow will be done through Powwow Times.
