An air quality warning has been issued for the southern part of the province, due to wildfire smoke.

The warning ranges from the Crowsnest Pass in the west to the Saskatchewan border in the east, which includes Kainai Nation, Pincher Creek, Fort MacLeod, Lethbridge, and Manyberries.

Environment Canada issued this warning due to the poor air quality these areas are experiencing.

According to Environment Canada, the air quality and visibility can fluctuate due to the wildfire smoke, with it changing over short distances and from hour to hour.

While wildfire smoke can affect everyone, it will likely impact those who are aged 65 and older, those who are pregnant, infants and young children, those with an existing illness or chronic health condition, and those who work outdoors more.

People are being encouraged to limit time outdoors and reschedule or cancel outdoor sports, activities, and events.

Mild symptoms related to wildfire smoke include eye, nose, and throat irritation, as well as headaches, a mild cough, while more serious symptoms include wheezing, chest pains, and a severe cough.

Lethbridge and Raymond both have an Air Quality Health Index (AQHI) of 6 for today.
