The Urban Society for Aboriginal Youth (USAY) recently celebrated the grand opening of a new Indigenous youth centre in Calgary, which is the first of its kind.

According to LeeAnne Ireland, Executive Director for Urban Society for Aboriginal Youth,  the new building will have space for various activities.

Ireland adds that their focus is on Indigenous Youth, aged 12 to 29, but the space is open for partnerships with not-for-profits.

While this is the first building the USAY has owned, they have been working towards having their own permanent home for the past 15 years.

They have always rented their spaces in the past, but with this new building, they have a permanent, secure space.

They are also able to lower their operating costs, which now has allowed them to offer more programming for youth, as well as grow their team.

The USAY received $3,920,000 from Indigenous Services Canada to build this new youth centre, which will help to expand culturally appropriate programs and services for over 4000 Indigenous youth in Calgary.
