The Lethbridge Housing Authority (LHA) opened a new supportive housing complex recently, and it has a culturally appropriate room for smudging and other ceremonies.
The LHA is a housing management body under the Minister of Assisted Living and Social Services, and they provide social and affordable housing for those in Lethbridge and southwest Alberta.
Recently, the LHA opened a 30-unit, recovery focused housing, that will welcome its first residents right after the Thanksgiving long weekend.
This housing complex will help provide supports for those who are exiting homelessness and are on a recovery pathway.
According to Robin James, the CAO for the LHA, the housing complex is designed for those who have a developmental delay and require additional care.
Those living in the complex will have to pay a fee for the housing and the services provided, which James says will be approximately $1,200 a month.
James explains what kinds of services are available.
James adds that if people’s needs aren’t met, then their health will decline.
This new housing complex is the first purpose built supporting housing building in the City of Lethbridge, and has a few key features.
One of those key features is a culturally appropriate room.
The other key feature they designed is that their residents will have access to outdoor spaces at the housing complex for them to enjoy.
This building is also built in a way that people will be able to age in place, because the residents are able to stay as long as they want.
While this is a new complex, the LHA has nearly 1,000 units in the City of Lethbridge.
