The Alberta Government says November Diploma Exams in Schools Across the Province Will Now Be Optional

By Sarah Scott Oct 17, 2025 | 2:18 PM

The Alberta government has announced that students will be automatically exempt from writing the November diploma exams.

With instructional time disrupted due to the ongoing teacher strike, the November 2025 diploma exams will now be **optional** for students. Those who still wish to write an exam may request to do so, and school boards must accommodate these requests. The exams will continue to take place on their **originally scheduled dates**.

The optional diploma exams apply to all schools provincewide.

Students who choose not to write can still complete their courses and graduate on time, the province said. Their final grade will be based entirely on the school-awarded mark given by their teacher.

According to the province, opting out of the November exams will not affect students’ ability to apply to, be accepted by, or attend post-secondary institutions after graduation.

No changes have been made to the January or June diploma exams or to provincial achievement tests.
