The Bearspaw First Nation will be building a new travel centre, after decades of negotiations.

The five-acre Eden Valley Travel Centre will include a fuel station, convenience store, and a retail space showcasing the creativity and craftsmanship of Bearspaw artisans. Beyond serving travellers and residents, the project is designed to create steady employment and generate lasting economic benefits for the community.

Robert Shotclose is the CEO of the Bearspaw First Nation, and he tells CJWE a bit of the history of Eden Valley, which ties into the development of the Travel Centre.

Shotclose says they were successful in gaining agricultural leasing from the government, but the land could only hold about ten animals per year.

He adds that he gives the UCP credit, because they kept that table alive, and they came to an agreement.

Because of that, they are now able to go forward to with their plans to do business along Highway 541.

They decided to develop a Travel Centre, because they wanted to recreate the business growth and job creation they saw with similar developments in Mînî Thnî, formerly known as Morley.

Shotclose says this new development is the first phase of their plans.

Shotclose adds that they have some other land, just outside of Calgary, that they are wanting to develop.

Construction on the Travel Centre is scheduled to begin in the spring of 2026, with it being completed early 2027.
