Siksika Nation elected a new Head Chief and new council, following the election that was held on Wednesday, November 26.
Today (Thursday, November 27), they held the inauguration for the Head Chief and Minor Chiefs.
Samuel Crowfoot was elected as the new Head Chief, who had served two terms as a Minor Chief with the Nation.
Crowfoot holds an Associate of Science, a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and specialized in trial advocacy and Indigenous law, and was previously a lawyer before running for Minor Chief.
According to Crowfoot, he is prepared for this role.
Crowfoot adds that he decided to run for Head Chief, because he saw some of the challenges the Nation is facing, with the hardest battles being legal in nature, and with his background in law, he felt he was the right fit.
Prior to running for council, Crowfoot was a Chief Prosecutor who managed a team of lawyers, and had collaborated with law enforcement agencies, such as the FBI and the US Attorney’s Office.
Crowfoot says he decided to run for Council, because he felt it was time to come home.
During his time as a Minor Chief, Crowfoot says he helped to create the Siksika Peace Force, and more.
Now that he is the Head Chief, there is more he wants to accomplish.
