Those who go hiking out in the Rockies west of Calgary, be careful in the mountains this week.

The area from Mount Murchison in the north to south of Mount Rundle is currently under a high avalanche risk.

According to Avalanche Canada, while the area is under a high risk of an avalanche, natural and human-triggered avalanches are likely.

Not only that, but Mt. Stephen and Mt. Bosworth avalanche closure zone is closed today (Tuesday, December 9).

The area south of Mount Rundle to the American border is under a slightly lower avalanche risk, but according to Avalanche Canada, there is a considerable risk of avalanches in the area.

Avalanche Canada warns that, while the region did not receive the snowfall amounts originally predicted, people should keep an eye on localized conditions, as some snow did fall with strong winds.

The wind slab development at upper elevations has increased, and the avalanche danger is elevated compared to the last several days.

There are also areas of Kananaskis Country that will be intermittently closed for avalanche control using explosives.

The area just west of Pincher Creek is under a moderate risk of avalanches occurring, and fresh wind slabs have likely developed in the area, which may be sensitive to human triggers.

Avalanche Canada warns people to approach ridge crests with caution.

Before heading out to the mountains, check the weather and keep an eye on the Avalanche Canada website.
