Calgary Issues Emergency Alert as Regional Water Supply Remains Critical

By Sarah Scott Jan 7, 2026 | 4:55 PM

The City of Calgary has issued a provincial emergency alert warning that water supply levels across the region remain “critical,” prompting renewed calls for immediate conservation.

The alert applies to all communities connected to Calgary’s water system, including: Airdrie, Strathmore, the Tsuut’ina Nation, and Chestermere.

City officials say urgent action is needed from residents and businesses to help stabilize the system and Calgarians are being asked to significantly reduce indoor water use.

Recommended steps include keeping showers under three minutes, limiting toilet flushing, and only running dishwashers and washing machines with full loads.

Despite conservation efforts, water use climbed again on Tuesday to 511 million litres, well above the city’s target of 485 million litres per day. Officials say the increase highlights the need for broader participation.

Mayor Jeromy Farkas is urging those who are able to work from home to do so, noting that reduced activity in workplaces could help lower overall water demand. Municipal staff eligible for remote work have been encouraged to stay home until January 16.

Calgary remains under Stage 4 water restrictions, the highest level, requiring major reductions in both indoor and outdoor water use.

Residents are encouraged to follow the City of Calgary’s website for updates.
